The Ugly Duckling

This week we’ve been busy, busy, busy at Kids Nook (almost as busy as the Little Red Hen!) But we still had time to meet with one of our new friends: The Very Ugly Duckling.

If you’re not familiar with the story, the Ugly Duckling is a little grey duck who looks and acts nothing like his brothers and sisters. After enduring a lot of teasing, he leaves his family only to discover that he’s not a duck at all! He’s a beautiful swan!

The kids loved this story, and they loved playing games with the Ugly Duckling. First we created a nest for them using finger paints…

Then we cleaned up the lakes so that they could swim better!

Look at those little ducks go!

Do you love playing with duckies? How about the ugly duckling? How would you treat him if you found him? Let us know in the comments below!

The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza)

I always enjoyed listening to the story of The Little Red Hen, but if I really think about it, it was because we always got to make a loaf of warm bread to go with it. This time when I told the story of The Little Red Hen to our kids, I decided to go with the updated version: The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza.

Why? Because I love pizza.

We listened to the story and afterwards went out and made our own “play pizzas”. We started with our homemade oat play-dough (which you might remember from our last story Goldilocks and the Three Bears). Afterwards we painted on “tomato sauce”…

Then we added some toppings. I added broken up spaghetti pieces to make it look like a cheese pizza.

lrh5

After we decorated our pizzas came the very best part: eating our own homemade toast pizzas!

Yum yum yum! We helped the Little Red Hen make her pizzas, so we got to enjoy our own! What kind of pizzas do you like to make? Would you help the Little Red Hen? Let us know in the commments below!

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Happy Tuesday everyone! Why is it a happy Tuesday? No particular reason, it just is!

This week we’re going to give you a peek into our story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I assume most of you know the story already: three bears leave the house, a little girl breaks in and wrecks havoc, the bears return and chase her away. It’s kind of a strange story, but it’s a fun one for learning about things like big and small, hard and soft.

g3b4

We started by cleaning up the Bear’s rooms but finding all of the soft balls and the hard balls, then putting them in separate containers.

g3b2

g3b1

Then we made porridge for our Bears, since Goldilocks ate all of theirs up!

Our kids did such a great job! Now the Bears can go back home and relax!

Have a great day everyone!

Play Time for Puppy

Our latest story was based on another fun one from the Hello Genius series, Play Time for Puppy. In this story we meet an energetic little puppy who loves to play with his toys and his friends. In the spirit of playtime, we created our own little toys from flour and salt…. but not before we did some extra playing around first!

Little Tiger Picks Up

Every wonder how a little Tiger picks up his room? Pretty much the same way as the rest of us do, only it’s a little bit more fun.

After we told the story of the Little Tiger who has to pick up his messes, we exercised our own powers of cleanliness.  First things first: playing!

ltpu2

ltpu3

But at the end of every play time, it’s time to clean up!

ltpu5

ltpu4

If anything is dirty, then it’s our duty to make sure it’s nice and shiny before we put it away.

ltpu6

Of course we have to clean up all the balls on the ground… after going through the tunnel!

Do you guys have any fun clean up games? Let us know!

The Three Little Sheep (a Reworking of The Three Little Pigs)

Happy Tuesday everyone! This week I want to tell you about our newest Sensory Story at Kids Nook, the Three Little Sheep. The Three Little Sheep is a re-working of the classic story The Three Little Pigs. Since we’re in Istanbul, Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country, we wanted a way to share this great story in a way that was a little less haram 😉

The good news: it didn’t matter whether it was sheep or pigs, the kids loved the story! They even got to make their own little houses for all the sheep! We made some houses out of straw, then out of sticks…

tls1

tls2

But when that didn’t work to protect the little sheep, we decided to roll up our sleeves and get some real work done with bricks and “mortar”.

tls4

tls5

The houses looked so great, and the kids were so proud of the work they’d done!

tls3

And just like that, the sheep are safe at home. Phew! What hard work!

How would you guys make houses for the little sheep? Let us know in the comments below!

Buttons for Pete

This week at Kids Nook we told another groovy tale of Pete the Cat, our favorite cool cat. After learning about his faaaavorite shirt, and it’s four groovy buttons that keep getting away, we decided to help Pete find his buttons and never lose them again!

Once we gave Pete back his buttons, we thought it would be nice for us to make a him a Big Colorful Button! We used our paintbrushes…

And even our fingers!

Pretty cool huh? Join us next Monday for a look at how we re-imaged the story of the Three Little Pigs into something a little more Istanbul friendly 🙂 And remember: keep on singing!

Are You Ready… For a BEAR HUNT?

Every time we tell this story to the kids, I make sure to warn them: Bear Hunting means getting messy, and it might get a little dangerous. But that’s okay, because we all have our moms with us right?

First we have to go through the icky dirt…bh6
bh2

Then we go through the dark forest!

Until we find… A BEAR!!!!

Take good care of him, okay guys? The bear is just grumpy from being woken up after all!

My Oh My! This Old Lady Swallowed… a Fly?!

This is probably one of my favorite stories to tell to our kids, mostly because it is just so absurd! I mean, an old lady swallows a fly, that I can believe. But a whole horse?! Crazy.

Despite the breaches in logic, our kids love this story just as much as we do. They feeding the old lady lots of bizarre animals…lol2
Then we get to go to our light tables and teach her how to eat right!

First we make the old lady out of kinetic sand and colored pasta.

lol3

lol6

lol4

Then we look inside her mouth and see…. flies!!!

lol5

Oh no! What should we do? Quick! Let’s trap the flies!

lol7

lol8

Phew! They’re all gone! Now we can teach the old lady how to enjoy some real food, like yummy grapes and sand cakes!

lol9

I’m so glad I got to share these games with you guys. Tell us how you play with “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly!” in the comments below!
